The “Phyllis D. Smalls Hurd Senior Technology Center” Is Unveiled
Brooklyn, NY – March 22, 2012 – On Monday, March 19, more than 80 colleagues, friends and family members came together at Bridge Street Development Corporation’s Quincy Senior Residences at 625 Quincy Street to celebrate the life and work of Phyllis Hurd, the residence’s beloved director who died unexpectedly on February 3, 2012. In honor of Ms. Hurd’s tireless efforts on behalf of the senior citizens living at Quincy and in the surrounding community, the building’s state of the art computer room was officially renamed “The Phyllis D. Smalls Hurd Senior Technology Center”.
With the wound of Ms. Hurd’s death still fresh, tears were shed at this memorial service, but the overriding theme of personal remembrances was her vibrant energy and her passionate commitment to providing the elderly population of Bedford-Stuyvesant with the best possible quality of life. A number of Bed-Stuy community leaders made remarks about their relationships with Ms. Hurd, including NYC Council Member Albert Vann, Joan Eastmond from NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery’s office, Charlene Phillips and Gloria Boyce of Community Board 3, and Colvin Grannum of Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation.
Dr. Thomas Kamber, executive director of Older Adults Technology Services (O.A.T.S.), which provides computer education to senior citizens, spoke of Ms. Hurd’s unflagging tenacity in bringing computers and computer training to the Quincy Senior Residences. Ms. Hurd met Dr. Kamber at a conference and expressed her desire to establish a computer center. Dr. Kamber asked her how much her budget for the project would be. “There is no budget,” she replied. “But I’m sure you’ll be able to figure out something.” Nearly two years later, Mr. Kamber did, in fact, figure out something, and a financial corporation that supports O.A.T.S. agreed to install the computer center at Quincy Senior Residences at no cost.
The Phyllis D. Smalls Hurd Senior Technology Center offers computers and computer training to the residents of the Quincy Senior Residences and to senior citizens in the surrounding community. For more information and a schedule of upcoming classes, call Michele Grimes at (718) 453-0685 x10.
